Thoughts on adding another dog

When getting a second dog, how important do you think it is to get a dog that is around the same age as your current dog? I know a lot of people add a puppy when they already have an adult dog. What complications have you experienced with that? I rescued a puppy that I hadn't planned on bringing in and I already had an adult dog approaching her senior years. It was a nightmare because the puppy constantly harassed and nipped the dog wanting to play. We ended up having to find the puppy another home because she was not a good fit in our home in any way. I'm also concerned about getting a puppy with an older dog because I think the younger dog will become depressed when the older one passes. What are your thoughts?

I can see your perspective in the importance of near same ages of additional dogs in the household. I am actually contemplating bringing in another dog so my current has a companion to play with and isn’t lonely. He seems to be afraid of several things and I think he’ll learn fast or pick up habits the other has- which can also be a downfall. Generally speaking though, I think the personalities will have to mesh to an extent as well. With my dog’s energy levels being high that is the exact reason I won’t get a puppy at this time because I don’t need double the trouble in that area. Haha
