Plz help me find a kid-friendly dog…
I am hoping for experienced help in selecting a dog. We recently had a sad experience with a shelter dog. We wanted a friendly dog that was good with kids and other dogs. We adopted Yeti ( 8-month-old yorkie-poo) Yeti was ultra-friendly at the shelter towards my kids and the other dogs but after a few days became aggressive towards my four kids (unpredictable snapping and growling) and EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE towards other dogs (barking, lunging and basically looked like trying to kill them). I found this website and bought all info on aggression, adjusting to a new home, training etc. We also found a trainer from Petsmart and went to sessions with her. We followed suggestions/advice from the website and the trainer. Four months later, we had tried REALLY hard and spent a lot of money on training and website fees, but we had to face the reality that our dog just did not like kids or other dogs. We did not want to return him to a shelter and found him a new home...luckily the dog trainer wanted to adopt him and she has no plans to ever have kids. Anyway, it was a SAD and TERRIBLE experience for my kids. We still would love to find a friendly dog for our family but are afraid to repeat this experience...Yeti was ultra friendly at first. Can you please help us? What are some signs that a dog is kid-friendly/dog-friendly? Would it be better to get a puppy or full grown dog? If you recommend a puppy, how can we tell which puppies in a litter are friendly? Thanks in advance for your help! Best, Kendeyl
