Eating bark

My Staffy (9weeks old) eats bark every time we're in our yard. I don't like to tell him off as: a) I say no to him about a million times a day for chewing things in the house, so figure to do it outside might squash his sense of exploration and adventure (esp given that pups are supposed to experience a lot through their mouth) b) He doesn't like coming outside at the best if times - prefers the warm/dryness of inside the house & whinges a lot while we're out there - so am keen to try and keep him happy out there so he associates it positively. ....Only he struggled to get a poo out this morning and whimpered a bit during. Is this a natural part of growing up? Will he eventually learn 'cause and effect' of the painful poos by himself? or do I need to start being vigilant and discourage this bark eating behaviour?
